The vast majority of reishi products on the market are made from what’s called ‘mycellium.’ Mycellium is the portion of the mushroom organism that typically grows underground or in a log. The ‘fruiting body’ on the other hand, grows above ground and is the portion that people are able to see, collect, and consume. The problem with most reishi extracts is that they’re made only with the mycellium that is grown in grain. This means it doesn’t actually contain the portion of the mushroom that has been traditionally consumed for it’s benefits. It’s literally like eating wood from an apple tree when you’re told you’re getting an apple. If you want bioavailable, active constituents then the mycellium products are not what you’re looking for.

The issue with mushroom extracts goes even further. A large portion of the material being extracted is actually the grain the mycellium is grown in. That means the vast majority of mushroom extracts on the market are mostly grain with a little bit of the non-medicinal part of the mushroom.
